Technical SEO helps search engines access, interpret, and consolidate the pages a business wants people to find. It does not replace useful content, a clear offer, or genuine authority. The practical goal is to remove technical obstacles and send consistent signals about each page's URL, topic, relationships, and indexability.
Start with the pages that matter to the business: homepage, primary services, location or product pages, key articles, contact paths, and any URLs already receiving search visits or links. A small site does not need a complicated audit platform to begin, but it does need accurate evidence.
1. Confirm the site can be crawled and indexed
Check robots.txt, page-level robots meta tags, password protection, HTTP status codes, and access rules. Make sure important pages return 200 and are not marked noindex. Keep private, duplicate, thin utility, or internal search pages out of results using the appropriate control.
Google explains that robots.txt manages crawler access; it is not a reliable way to remove a web page from search results. Its robots meta documentation describes page-level indexing controls. Review the actual rendered HTML and HTTP headers rather than assuming a WordPress setting applied everywhere.
2. Create a useful XML sitemap
The sitemap should contain canonical, indexable URLs that the business wants search engines to consider. Remove redirects, errors, duplicates, private pages, and intentionally noindexed URLs. Submit the sitemap in the appropriate search-engine tools and monitor processing errors.
Google's sitemap guidance recommends fully qualified URLs and notes that most content-management systems can generate the file. A sitemap can aid discovery and canonical signals, but it does not guarantee indexing.
3. Use one preferred URL for each page
Choose consistent HTTPS, hostname, trailing-slash, parameter, and pagination behavior. Redirect retired or changed URLs only when there is a relevant destination. Use a self-referencing canonical on normal indexable pages and a deliberate canonical where duplicate or very similar versions are unavoidable.
Google treats redirects and rel="canonical" as strong signals and sitemap inclusion as a weaker signal. Its canonical documentation also warns that Google makes the final selection. Avoid contradictory canonicals, internal links, redirects, and sitemap entries.
4. Check titles, descriptions, and headings
Give each important page a concise, descriptive title aligned with its visible main heading and search intent. Write a unique meta description that helps a potential visitor understand the page. Use one logical H1, followed by H2 and H3 sections that reflect the content structure.
Search engines can generate different result text. Google's title-link guidance explains that it may consider the title element, main visual title, headings, Open Graph title, and link text. Consistency makes the page easier for both readers and systems to understand.
5. Make internal links descriptive and crawlable
Link related articles to relevant service, category, and conversion pages using normal anchor elements with useful text. Avoid “click here,” empty linked icons, important destinations available only through scripts, and orphan pages with no meaningful path from the rest of the site.
Google's link guidance recommends standard anchor elements with href attributes and descriptive anchor text. Review navigation, breadcrumbs, article links, cards, and footer paths.
6. Audit redirects, errors, and URL changes
- Fix internal links that point through redirects.
- Replace redirect chains with one relevant hop.
- Return a genuine 404 or 410 for content with no replacement.
- Redirect a changed URL to its closest useful equivalent.
- Do not send every deleted page to the homepage.
- Check soft-404 pages that return 200 without useful content.
- Preserve valuable URLs during redesign whenever possible.

7. Verify mobile experience and performance
Test representative templates at desktop, tablet, and mobile sizes. Look for horizontal overflow, hidden content, difficult navigation, small controls, intrusive overlays, layout shifts, oversized media, slow server response, and JavaScript failures. Test forms and calls to action, not only page speed.

8. Use structured data that matches the visible page
Organization, Website, Breadcrumb, Article, Product, LocalBusiness, or FAQ markup may be appropriate depending on the page and actual content. Do not add a schema type just because a plugin offers it. Values should be accurate, consistent, and visible where required.
Google's structured-data guidelines state that markup must represent the main visible content and that eligibility does not guarantee a rich result. Validate generated JSON-LD and keep one system authoritative so plugins and themes do not compete.
9. Check images and social metadata
Use meaningful filenames and concise alternative text that describes the image's purpose. Avoid embedding essential text only in an image. Confirm Open Graph and Twitter titles, descriptions, URL, and suitable share image; social metadata does not directly replace on-page SEO, but it affects how links are presented.
10. Connect monitoring to maintenance
Review Search Console coverage, sitemap processing, crawl errors, manual actions, security issues, Core Web Vitals, queries, and important landing pages. Annotate redesigns, migrations, domain changes, and major releases. Track whether a drop is site-wide, template-specific, query-specific, or simply seasonal.
